How to Remove Mold from Your Roof

Noticing mold on your roof can be an alarming, concerning sight. You may be wondering what the best plan for taking care of roof mold is. Here are some suggestions from Integrity Roofing and Exteriors, your local roofers in Southern Illinois.

What To Do

After finding mold on your roof, a good first step is to have your attic inspected for and to determine the condition of the roof. Luckily, mold is not often harmful to your roof, however, it is typically caused due to roof leaks, so it is a sign that your roof may be in need of repair. Moldy roofs are made of a combination of algae, moss, and mold and have an unattractive appearance.

How to Clean the Mold

Cleaning mold from your roof is going to require you to climb up on your roof, which can be risky for the average homeowner. If you want to avoid this risk, or simply just don’t want to mess with climbing atop your roof, you can call a roofing company and they should be able to help you out.

However, if you want to do it yourself, it most certainly can be done. Before climbing up on your roof, make sure to have help on hand to ensure that you are secured. Next, you need to gather your cleaning materials. Though it is tempting to use a pressure washer, it is not recommended because it can damage your shingles. Instead, you will want to use a hose with an attached nozzle instead.

To clean it you can either use a solution of bleach and water (1 part bleach to 1 part water) or purchase a cleaning solution, being careful to purchase a product that is right for your roof. If you elect to use the bleach and water solution, spray the solution on the roof and let sit for an hour before rinsing. If you decide to use a cleaning solution, follow the directions given on the cleaner.
